Mathew McClerin was born in 1760 in Newcastle, Delaware to James McClerin and Elizabeth Donald (Macdonald) McClerin. At the age of 20, he was married to then-17-year-old Mary Kinkaid in 1780. They are listed on the 1790 US Federal Census residing in Derry, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. They had seven children: Catherine, Jane, Mary, George W. (b. September 9, 1796), Susannah (b. February 2, 1798), Nancy (b. 1800), and James (b. January 11, 1807).
