There is a great deal of speculation among Polly’s descendants as to where she is buried and what her middle name is.

One database lists Polly’s middle name as Frances and notes that she is buried at Dills Cemetery in Duffield, Scott County, VA, but provides no sources for this information.

That said, there are several pieces of circumstantial evidence that lend credence to Polly’s burial at Dills Cemetery and a middle name Frances:

* Polly’s daughter is also named Mary Frances Newland.

* In the 1850 Census we see Polly and her family beginning a migration West, from Wythe County, VA to Washington County, VA, where she is living with her husband William and 2 of her children, Elizabeth and James.  Family researcher Lesley Ann Johnson Hager believes that by 1860 Polly had continued her move to the West.  Lesley has found an elderly Mary Newland living with a younger James Newland in Estillville, Scott County, VA (now Gate City, VA) in the 1860 Census.  She believes this is Polly living with her son James.

* Findagrave lists Wiley Dills buried at Dills Cemetery in Duffield, Scott County VA.  Wiley is the son of Amanda C (Newland) Dills, Polly’s daughter.
