Elizabeth Mitchell Newland was born on April 22, 1817 to William Newland and Mary Frances (Horn) Newland in Wythe, Virginia. She was married to Austin Miller on December 18, 1839 in Wythe. They had 14 children: Armindy, Henrietta Whittman (b. March 27, 1842), William Ballard (b. October 8, 1843), J Wiley (b. June 12, 1845), June Caroline (b. May 10, 1846), Thomas Kemp (b. January 17, 1848), Edward Robert (b. January 11, 1849), Mary Sue (b. June 11, 1850), Elizabeth Luemma (b. August 16, 1851), Austin Elbert (b. May 9, 1853), Fannie Elmira (b. March 13, 1855), Ida Alice (b. July 13, 1857), Rufus Robert Basil (b. March 7, 1858), and Mariah Zobeda (b. January 21, 1860). The family resided in Wythe their whole lives. Elizabeth died on June 20, 1880 in Wytheville. She is buried in the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Cemetery in Black Lick, Wythe, Virginia.
